How do I convert a Family Tree Maker file

You will know how to update an FTM file of the old version into the new version of Family Tree Maker. When Family Tree Maker is upgraded to version 2019. you may not be able to convert the files. This may also occur when you change the location of  FTM file.

The problem with converting an FTM file can be fixed in the following way:

Determine whether your external hard drive is functioning. In case you stored your FTM data in an external disk, here are the steps that you should execute to verify this information:

  • Toggle the Windows key and the R key.
  • A RUN box will appear.
  • Type “C:” in the box. This gives access to the C drive in the computer.
  • Ensure that you have an external hard disk where you save your FTM data.
  • In case you do not notice your external disk and unplug it and re-plug.
  • Verify that you have your default folder in • Family Tree Maker that you were using before.
  • To check whether the default location is established, launch Family Tree Maker, select Tools and then select Options. Then you will be able to see the folder in which the software searches the files.
  • Ensure that you do not have folders on read-only.

To determine how to test whether your folder is not read-only in order to convert the files:

Open the Documents folder. There will be the Family Tree Maker folder. First, right-click the folder, select Properties and the tab that is as General. Find the box that contains attributes. This may solve your problem. Otherwise, we recommend using the Family Tree Maker support.
