With the Manage Relationships tool, one can also sort relationships between couples and parents and their children by type (e.g., Partner or Spouse, Biological or Adopted). With a couple of clicks, you can switch between (or start) either one type of relationship, be it a one-to-one relationship or a many-to-many relationship.
Managing Relationships in Family Tree Maker 2019 for Mac
1. In Family Tree Maker, having your tree open, access the Edit menu and select Manage Relationships.
2. Although asked, back up your tree file. The lesson that we will always preach to you is to create a complete backup, prior to you making any significant changes to the tree.
3. On the Manage Relationships dialog, which opens, use the pop-up menu of Show relationships to select the type of relationship you want to change.
The Show relationships filter lets you search e.g., to include all couples that have a Marriage fact, but the relationship type is set to the default Current Unknown. Such relationships can very historically be transformed to “Spouse” with the tool.
The Relationship Instances list displays all instances of the type of relationship of which you have chosen. At the top of the list, there is the total number of instances.
4. Check the box with each of the relationships where you would like to modify the relationship type. In order to modify all the relationships in the list, one should check the Select all box.
Tip:- You can also sort the Person 1, Person 2, Parent and Child column header up and down to find certain couples or parent and child relationships more easily.
5. Select the new relationship type the selected relationships will have by choosing their type in the same Change selected relationships to this type pop-up menu.
6. Click Apply
The process of updating the relationship types can become time consuming particularly when you are making numerous changes. There is a progress indicator at the bottom of the dialog which marks the progress of the process.
The relationships which are chosen are cleared out of the list as soon as the changes are complete. You can later visit them again in the Show relationships menu in the pop-up object of new relationship type.
7. When you’re finished, click Close
Managing Relationships in Family Tree Maker 2019 for Windows
To use the Manage Relationships tool, follow these steps:
1. The Manage Relationships option is selected in the Edit menu of your tree in Family Tree Maker.
2. Merge you tree file when asked. Create a complete backup when you are doing any major changes to the tree, always recommend that.
3. The type of relationship you wish to modify appears in the Show relationships drop-down list of the Manage Relationships dialog that opens.
Use the Show relationships filter to find, as an example, all marriage facts couples the type of relationship of which is currently unknown. It is so easy to edit such relationships using the tool to be a “Spouse”.
Relationships of the selected type can be seen in the Relationship Instances list. The sum of the instances is found next to the list title.
4. Great the checkbox that appears beside each of the relationships that you wish to modify the type of relationship. The relationship in the list can be changed to all the relationships by clicking on the Select all checkbox.
Easy way out: The list is sorted at the beginning in alphabetical order in accordance with the names of the individuals in the first column (Person 1 or Parent). You can also sort the list alphabetically on that column by clicking the Person 2 or Child column header, should you need to sort the list by the relationship you want.
5. To change the Change selected relationship to this type drop-down list, select one of the new possible relationships type that you wish that the selected relationships have.
6. Click Apply
