What You Need First
- Install FTM 2019 or 2024 on both PCs before beginning.
- Portable storage like a USB flash drive.
- Maintain cloud syncing on both machines with the same TreeVault account.
Transfer Steps: From First to Second Computer
The steps to safely migrate your FTM Source tree are:
On First Computer
- Select the tree to transfer in Family Tree Maker.
- Completely backup your FTM Source tree. File > “Backup.”
- Find the.ftmb backup file on your PC after the backup.
- Transfer this backup to a USB flash drive or other storage.
- Take the flash drive from the first computer safely.
On the Second Computer
- Insert the flash drive into the new computer and copy the backup file to the Documents or Family Tree Maker folder.
- Open Family Tree Maker on the second computer.
- File > “Restore.”
- Select the copied backup file and click “Open.”
- Choose where to save the restored tree and confirm.
- Once recovered, FTM will open your family tree and display all data, including media.
Reconnecting TreeVaultSync
TreeVault Cloud Services users that wish to join their antenna tree:
- Log into TreeVault on the second computer with the same account.
- Open repaired FTM tree.
- Click Select Tree or View > Tree Browser.
- Click “TreeVault” on the left, then “Next.”
- Click “Find FTM Source Tree” and choose your repaired tree.
- Relink the repaired tree to your antenna tree by clicking “Use as Source Tree”.
- Now only modifications to this Source tree on the second machine sync with TreeVault. Links to your initial computer’s tree will end.
