
Managing family tree relationships demands precision. Family Tree Maker lets you trace couples’ relationships till death. Understanding how to set and alter connection statuses preserves your genealogy study and completes your family history. The default relationship state is “Ongoing”. You can alter this status if needed. If a couple divorces, use their relationship status.
- The couple may be selected from the People tab located inside the Tree of the workspace.
- From the Person tab, click Relationships.
- Name the spouse. To change the status, open the editing panel and click the Status menu.

FTM 2024’s general preferences can be set to “Upon Death of Either Spouse: Change relationship status to Deceased” to automatically change couples’ relationship status to “Deceased” after either spouse dies.
- How to enable this Mac setting: Click the Family Tree Maker 2024 menu on your Mac’s upper panel, pick Settings, and check “Upon Death of Either Spouse”.
- How to enable this Windows setting: Tools > Options > General > Check “Upon Death of Either Spouse”
